Abdelkader A. Hawasli, MD, FACS

Dr. Hawasli is the director of Laparoscopic Surgery and the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Hawasli pioneered laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder in 1989. Other minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures he has performed include laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND) for morbid obesity, sleeve gastrectomy, removal of the gallbladder, appendix, spleen, adrenal gland and colon; and repair of groin hernia and hiatal hernia. In addition, he has performed anti-reflux procedures for heartburn (GERD), kidney removal for transplant, and radio-frequency ablation of unresectable liver cancers. He has been board certified in general surgery since 1986, and was recognized in 2004 and 2005 as one of the region’s most respected general surgeons in Hour Detroit magazine’s annual “Top Docs” ranking. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Ahmed A, Meguid, MD

Dr. Meguid is a general surgeon who specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures, including laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND). He earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and completed a general surgical residency at William Beaumont Hospital and a fellowship at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. He also has pursued advanced training in laparoscopic surgery and performs a wide variety of laparoscopic procedures. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is in practice with Eastside Surgical Specialists, PC, in St. Clair Shores.

Alwyn D. Harriott, MD 

Dr. Harriott is a general surgeon who specializes in advanced laparoscopic procedures, including laparoscopic band placement (LAP BAND) and Laproscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.  He earned his medical degree from Wayne State University and completed his general surgery residency and fellowship at St. John Hospital and Medical Center.  Dr. Harriott is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.  He is in practice with Hawasli and Associates, PC, in St. Clair Shores.

Carl M. Pesta, DO 

Dr. Pesta is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgical weight loss procedures, including laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND). He earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Pesta completed a general surgical residency at McLaren Regional Medical Center, formerly Mt. Clemens General Hospital, in Mount Clemens,MI, and a Bariatric Surgery proctorship at Henry Ford Bi-County Hospital in Warren, MI. He performs a wide variety of laparoscopic procedures including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy as well as revision and conversion procedures. Gary R. Katz, DO

A specialist in general surgery, Dr. Katz is Medical Director of the bariatric surgical team at St. John Weight Loss Center and performs the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND), laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and Stomaphyx. He received his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, Des Moines, Iowa, and completed both his internship and his residency at Oakland General Hospital in Madison Heights, MI. He is certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Surgeons. Additionally he is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association, the Michigan State Medical Society, the Oakland County Medical Society and the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. Keith Marshall, DO 

Dr. Marshall is a board certified general surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic weight loss surgery, since 1994. He completed medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1979. Dr. Marshall completed his general surgery residency at Mt. Clemens General Hospital in Mt. Clemens Michigan in 1984. He became a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons in 1989. He has been a member of the ASMBS and SAGES since 1996. Dr. Marshall has trained and proctored at least five different Bariatric programs in Michigan and has been teaching surgical residents Bariatric surgery for 18 years. Kerry L. Kole, DO

Dr. Kole has a special interest in weight loss surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, general and emergency surgery and is fellowship-trained in trauma and critical care. He is board certified in general surgery.  Among the types of bariatric surgery he performs are laparoscopic band placement (LAP-BAND), laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Stomaphyx, revision and conversion. He has performed more than 700 bariatric procedures, both open and laparoscopic. He is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and has been an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University. He has authored more than 20 scientific articles and book chapters and is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (FACOS) and a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.

Mubashir A. Sabir, MD

Dr. Sabir is a board certified general surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery.  He completed medical school at Wayne State University and training at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan.  He also completed a fellowship in laparoscopic bariatric surgery at the University Medical Center of Princeton.  Dr. Sabir is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and a fellow of the International College of Surgeons.  Dr. Sabir performs the following laparoscopic procedures:  adjustable gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.  As a general surgeon, he performs gall bladder, appendix, colon, gastrointestinal, skin, and endocrine surgery. Dr. Sabir also performs both lower and upper endoscopy.

Mustafa A. Hares, MD, FACS

Dr. Hares is a member of the bariatric surgical team at St. John Weight Loss Center. He specializes in several types of bariatric surgery, including biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) duodenal switch, open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional bariatric surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Hares earned his medical degree from Damascus (Syria) University Medical School, then completed residencies in general surgery at Christ Hospital, Oaklawn, Illinois (St. Luke’s Presbyterian University Program) and the North Oakland Medical Centers, Pontiac, Michigan (U-M Surgery Program). He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and International College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity.
